The Central Bank of Russia said in a press release November 6 that it has begun issuing 20m special RUB100 notes commemorating the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games that will be held in Sochi in 2014.

The new notes are blue, have a vertical orientation on front and back, measure 150 mm x 65 mm, are printed on paper, and have an Optiks security thread. The front design is a snowboarder, mountains and the Olympic venues in Sochi. The back features a firebird and the Olympic Stadium "Fischt" in Sochi.

The new notes are legal tender and will circulate in parallel with existing notes of the same denomination.
