Russia is now for the first time ranked second in the world in terms of arms sales as of the end of 2017, with a 9.5% share of the global arms sales market, pushing the UK out of the slot (9%).

The UK has ranked second since 2002, the Stockholm Institute for Peace and Conflict Research (SIPRI) said. The world leader remains the US, which also gained more market share, strengthening its dominance to take 57% of the market in 2017.

Russian arms maker Almaz-Antey Air Defence was included in the top ten for the first time, in tenth place. Its sales in 2017 increased by 8.5% to $37.7bn. “Russian companies have significantly increased arms sales since 2011,” said SIPRI senior researcher Simon Wesemann as cited by Vedomosti. “This corresponds to the increased expenses of Russia for the modernisation of its armed forces.” The rating takes into account not only exports, but also domestic supplies, the expert said.
