Romania's wheat crop has decreased 32.7% to 4.78mn tonnes this year, news agency Agerpres reported. Daniel Botanoiu, a state secretary at the agriculture ministry, was quoted as saying last week that more than 47% of the corn fields have been affected by the drought. The agency quoted Laurentiu Baciu, chairman of a local farmers' association, as saying that there are areas where the drought-stricken [corn] crop is "totally destroyed". Some 2.67mn hectares have been put under corn this year, up from 2.63mn in 2011. Last year's corn yield totalled 11.67mn tonnes. In 2011, Romania ranked first in the EU in terms of areas cultivated with corn, and lagged second behind France in terms of corn production, the report said. According to Baciu, this year's sunflower production could be 40-45% lower on the year.
