Romanian wind farms' total installed capacity is expected to reach 5,000 MW by the end of 2016, the head of the Romanian Wind Energy Association, Ionel David, was quoted as saying by Hotnews. The installed wind capacity in the country is seen rising to 3,286 MW by the end of 2013 from 982MW at end-2011, David told a news conference. Wind farms with an installed capacity of 1,000MW will be commissioned this year alone, he said. Even though Romania started late, it could outshine countries like Austria and Greece in terms of installed wind capacity soon, David added. For comparison, the installed capacity of Romania's hydropower company Hidroelectrica is around 6,500 MW, while the installed capacity of its nuclear plant Cernavoda is 1,400 MW. Nonetheless, the wind farms are characterised by low capacity utilisation rate - of between 25% to 33%, depending on the natural conditions, as well as by weak predictability and high volatility of their output. The great success of the Romanian wind farms is owed to the favourable natural conditions in the eastern areas of the country, but also to the generous subsidies granted by the state under the Tradable Green Certificates schema funded via higher end-user prices. |
