The turnover of retail trade companies remained flat year-on-year in Estonia in December (measured in constant prices), at €667.9mn, Statistics Estonia said on January 30.

This came after retail sales accelerated their growth to 5% y/y in constant prices in November, continuing a series of feeble annual growth rates of 1%-3% seen throughout most of 2018, except in January and May, when turnover fell.

In December, turnover of stores selling manufactured goods increased 3% y/y, while turnover of grocery stores fell 1% y/y, and the turnover of automotive fuel vendors decreased 6% y/y.

Within the manufactured goods segment, the largest increase was in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics, with sales increasing 13% y/y.

Turnover was also up in other non-specialised stores which sell predominantly manufactured goods (e.g. department stores), stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear and in other specialised stores, which include bookshops, toyshops, sporting goods retailers and so on.

On the other hand second-hand shops, mail order and online vendors and non-store retailers such as market stalls fell compared to December 2017. The turnover of stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials remained flat y/y.
