The ruling Georgian Dream is running neck-and-neck with the main opposition party the United National Movement (UNM) ahead of the October parliamentary elections, a new poll by German research institute GfK showed, Georgia Today reported on August 25.

As many as 25.8% of the respondents said they would vote for Georgian Dream if elections were held today, while 25.5% said their first choice would be UNM. The results suggest the two parties would likely attract most of the votes in the October 8 elections, but neither of them would muster enough to ensure a simple majority in parliament. Therefore, smaller parties could play an important role in forming the new government.

State for the People, a new political party founded in May by former Georgian opera singer Paata Burchuladze, came in third with 6.9% of respondents’ votes, according to the GfK poll. The Labour Party would attract 3.7% of the votes, ahead of the Free Democrats with the backing of 2.9% and the Patriots Alliance with 1.6%. As many as 19% of the respondents said they were undecided.

The GfK poll also showed that 48.3% of Georgians disapprove of the current government, while the share of supporters accounts for 46.6%.
