Poland sells CO2 emission rights to Japan at EUR 13mn.

Environment minister Andrzej Kraszewski has signed an agreement to sell rights for the emission of dioxide from coal worth of EUR 13mn, the ministry has announced. However, in early March, Kraszewski said that proceeds of this deal would amount to close on EUR 30mn. This is the third sale of assigned amount units (AAU) - previously, Poland sold CO2 emission rights to Spain (for EUR 20mn in November) and Ireland (for EUR 15mn in December). In February, Kraszewski said that Poland counted on obtaining EUR 1bn from the sale of AAUs of CO2, by 2012. According to him, Poland has 500mn tones of AAU, which could be worth of up to EUR 4bn, however, it would be difficult to find purchasers for the whole volume. He added then that there were talks in progress, and "the queue is long," hence the ministry wanted to organize the second or even the third negotiating team. Poland has a surplus of emission rights estimated at 500mn AAUs, the third biggest one in the world in the period of 2008-2012. tom
