Almost half of all Moldovans, 49.5%, do not trust any politician, the results of the Public Opinion Barometer showed on December 14, Agora.md reported.
More respondents also picked “Don’t know” (6.8%) or “Someone else” (2.1%) or declined to answer pollsters than opted for many of the politicians on the list.
However, the country’s pro-Russian President Igor Dodon enjoys the most confidence from the population, with 19.8% of respondents indicating they trust him. Around 8% of Moldovans trust Maia Sandu, president of the pro-EU opposition Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). Last year, Sandu lost the presidential elections to Dodon in the second round.
Only 2.5% of Moldovans trust Andrei Nastase, head of fellow pro-EU opposition Dignity and Truth Party (PPDA). Sandu and Nastase recently announced that their parties have formed a pro-EU platform open to any party that wants to join it.
The poll revealed that Prime Minister Pavel Filip and the ruling coalition’s head Vlad Plahotniuc have low rates of confidence among Moldovans. Only 1.5% of the surveyed Moldovans said they trust the two politicians - even lower than the 1.7% who said they trusted businessman and Orhei mayor Ilan Shor, one of the main suspects in the $1bn banking frauds investigation.
Former prime ministers Zinaida Greceanîi and Iurie Leanca, parliament speaker Adrian Candu, Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu, and Chisinau mayor Doris Chirtoaca all scored below 1%.
The survey showed that Dodon remains the most popular politician in the country, although support for him has declined. Given a list of politicians, 33% of the surveyed Moldovans said they trust Dodon. The percentage is 19 points lower than in the previous survey. Dodon is followed by Sandu (18.5%, -17.5pp) and Socialist leader Zinaida Greceanii (15.7%). When given a list of politicians, 9.9% of Moldovans said they trusted Filip.
