Montenegro's public debt grows 20% y/y to 45.1% of GDP in Q1.

The public debt of Montenegro surged 19.8 y/y to EUR 1,534.8mn or 45.1% of GDP in March 2012, the finance ministry reported. The debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 39% a year earlier. On a monthly basis, public debt reversed the upward trend from Feb (when it added 4.5% or EUR 67.1mn) and dropped by 0.4% (EUR 5.5mn). Foreign debt, which accounted for 72% of total debt, rose by 23.2% y/y or EUR 209.1mn in nominal terms. Domestic debt also rose considerably in March, registering an 11.7% annual growth. The weights of domestic and foreign debt in total public debt remained at similar levels compared to a year earlier. The finance ministry projects public debt in 2012 to rise to 50.1% of GDP, up from 45.4% in 2011.
