European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso stated after his meeting with PM Igor Luksic in Brussels that Montenegro is on the right track, while its next steps towards the EU depend on its own achievements. Barroso underlined that the recently obtained candidate-country status was not only a fair recognition of the governments efforts, but also a great responsibility for the authorities, who should implement the required reforms for achieving fully-fledged membership in the Union. Montenegro applied for EU membership in December 2008 after signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the union in October 2007. The country officially became a candidate country for EU accession on December 17, 2010. |
