Montenegrin government makes measured response to Trump's accusations of aggression

The Montenegrin government has reacted to US President Donald Trump's comments that their country may cause world war three saying that Montenegro is "proud of its history" and "peaceful politics" that contribute to peace and stability in the region and beyond.

In an interview with Fox News on July 18 Trump described the people of Montenegro as “very aggressive”, suggesting that the tiny country could be the cause of a third world war, comments which drew immediate outrage and ridicule from commentators and media. 

“We build friendships, and we have not lost single one, and at the same time we are able to boldly and defensively protect and defend our own national interests,” the government said in a statement on July 19. 

The government added that the friendship between Montenegro and the US will remain strong and permanent. 

“In today's world, it does not matter how big or small you are, but to what extent you cherish the values of freedom, solidarity and democracy,” it said. 

Montenegro, a small country with population of around 630,000, was one of the six republics of former Yugoslavia, which started to fall apart in the early 1990s. It has military personal of just 3,400.
