The Turkish military says that it launched ground and air assaults on the PKK inside Turkey and in northern Iraq in retaliation to the death of 24 soldiers earlier this week. The military statement details that under this large scale operation it mobilised 22 battalions (around 10,000-15,000 troops) and warplanes hit PKK positions, especially in northern Iraq. US state department spokesman Mark Toner said the US administration supports Turkeys right to self-defence. Meanwhile, PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Nechirvan Barzani, a former PM of the regional Kurdish government in Northern Iraq, in Ankara. Barzani condemned the PKK attack in which 24 Turkish soldiers were killed and said that president of the regional Kurdish government Massoud Barzani may pay a visit to Turkey soon.
