Macedonia’s industrial production turns to strong annual growth in January
By bne IntelliNews March 7, 2018

Macedonia's industrial output turned to a strong annual growth of 8.4% in January after falling by 2.6% y/y a month earlier, the statistics office said on March 7.

The growth, rarely seen in the last few months, was the result of the strong performance of the key manufacturing sector in the first month of the year, even though mining and quarrying as well as the utilities sector registered a fall.

The biggest production volume was registered in the divisions of food and beverages production, textile, rubber and plastic products as well as mineral products.

Mining output edged down by 0.3% y/y, reversing a 1.8% y/y increase a month before.

The manufacturing sector jumped by 16.9% y/y in January, after falling by 1.5% y/y in the previous month.

The utilities sector plummeted by 28.4% y/y, deepening from a 11.2% y/y decline in December.

Macedonia's industrial output edged up by only 0.2% y/y in 2017, after rising by 3.4% a year earlier with the slowdown stemming from a production decline in the key manufacturing sector.
