Kazakhstan wants to impose criminal responsibility for environmental damages.

Kazakh environment protection minister Nurgali Ashimov stated that oil and gas companies may face criminal liability for environmental damages, exceeding KZT 130mn (USD 882,000). The government submitted a bill that will tighten ecological protection. The bill will be discussed by the parliament in the end of the year. The minister also warned that the will be no ,,discounts" for companies. He added that prison terms for environmental damages will be between 2-8 years. Significantly, Kazakhstan is consistently tightening control over its oil and gas sector.
