Kazakhstan to export 8mn tonnes of grain, also to Russia.

By bne IntelliNews August 20, 2010
Kazakhstan will export 8mn tonnes of grain in 2010/2011 marketing year, the agriculture minister Akylbek Kurishbayev has stated. He added that Russia, Iran and other countries will be supplied with 2mn tonnes. Meanwhile, traders are receiving phone calls from Russia asking for wheat and flour. One of the traders from Northern Kazakhstan stated that exports to Russia may exceed 2mn tonnes. To remind you, Kazakhstan expects to harvest 13.5-14.5mn tonnes of grains in bunker weight this year, despite drought. The recent exports forecast is higher than earlier prediction - fortunately, Kazakhstan has relatively high carry-over stock from last year. The Agriculture Ministry also declared that 4mn tonnes of grain will be supplied to the Caucasus and Central Asian neighbours of Kazakhstan. Significantly, a few weeks ago, Russian PM Vladimir Putin declared ban on grain exports. The declaration led to high growth in world grain prices. Presently, Russia expects grain harvest at 60mn tonnes, down from earlier projected 75mn tonnes. The import needs, if any, would be known in October after completion of the harvest period. If Russia decided to import grain from Kazakhstan, it would be the first time since the Collapse of USSR.
