Kazakhstan convicts former deputy defence minister for 11 years in prison.

A Kazakh court sentenced former deputy defence minister Lieutenant General Kazhimurat Mayermanov, to 11 years in prison. He was found guilt of abusing his office and corruption. At the same time, an Israeli citizen Boris Schenkman was sentenced for also 11 years in prison fro fraud and bribery. The charges are connected to a series of contracts with Israeli defence firm to supply modern artillery to Kazakhstan. Under the deal, Israeli firms were to help Kazakhstan to manufacture advanced artillery pieces domestically. The artillery could use aerial drones for targeting. However, according to Kazakh defence officials, most of the artillery was defective and Kazakhstan lost USD 82mn in the deal. To remind you, officials from the Kazakh Defence Ministry were arrested in spring 2009.
