By bne IntelliNews September 21, 2012
Hungary harvested 3.97mn tonnes wheat in 2012, down by 3.3% y/y, data from the statistical office showed. The lower harvest came despite an 8.8% increase in the used arable land. The average yield per hectare fell 11% y/y to 3.74 tonnes in 2012. Among the other cereals, rye was produced on 7.2% y/y more hectares in 2012, which resulted in a 4.3% y/y increase in the harvest. The harvested barley was 0.8% y/y higher as the harvested area grew by 5.6% y/y. Both rye and barley saw lower average production per hectare. In total, cereal production came down by 2% y/y to 5.53mn tonnes, despite a 7.9% y/y increase in the grown area. This resulted in an average production per hectare of 3.6 tonnes in 2012, down by 9.2% y/y. The lower harvest is likely to raise pressure on cereal prices in Hungary.
