US car maker General Motors plans to start in March the construction of a 30,000-sqm unit at its production plant in Szentgotthard, western Hungary, as part of its EUR 500mn expansion programme, Vilaggazdasag reported, quoting Tamas Zsolt, the managing director of the local subsidiary, GM Powertrain. The project will double the floor space of the plant and will raise its payroll by 800 to 1,400 upon its completion, scheduled for November 2012. GM got HUF 7.5bn in government grant for the implementation of the project. The company initially announced its intentions to expand the capacity of its plant in Hungary last September. According to earlier media reports, three new engine lines will start operation.
