Every fifth Russian worker earns less than RUB15,000 ($250) per month, according to the results of a study by the RIA Rating agency, which RIA Novosti cites .

Over 33% of people living in 22 regions earn less than this amount, according to the survey. Dagestan leads in the share of low-paid employees, where the share of people receiving less than RUB15,000 per month is nearly half (46%). In second place are residents of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic (44%). In six regions, two out of five workers receive less than RUB15,000 a month, the agency said.

The regions which have the best pay were led by Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District where over a quarter (27%) of workers earn more than RUB100,000 ($1,505) per month. In second place is the Chukotka Autonomous Region, where 26% of residents receive over RUB100,000 a month. Following them in order were the Nenets Autonomous District and the Magadan region, while Moscow comes only fifth.

As bne IntelliNews reported in September the salaries in the regions are well behind the national average. In general the average incomes in the remote mineral producing regions are a lot higher than those in the European part of the country, especially in the Volga basin. However, the cost of living in the remote regions is much higher due to difficult logistics and this cancels out most of the gains.

Half the workers in Russia receive an average salary in the range of RUB17,000-RUB44,000 per month, the study found.
