EU official: Croatia could make major progress in EU talks in next weeks.

The head of the European Union Delegation to Croatia, Paul Vandoren, said that the country could make major progress in its EU entry talks in the next weeks. He declined to say whether the country could finalise its EU membership negotiations this year. Vandoren said the country had to be able to open the last three chapters, including the policy chapters on competition and judiciary and fundamental rights, in June or July. As recalled, last week an EU diplomat said that Croatia could open the policy chapter on judiciary and fundamental rights in its EU accession by end-June. The chapter could be opened after the assessment of a report on the country's cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), carried out by ICTY chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz and submitted to the UN Security Council. According to the report, Croatia has made progress in investigating missing military documents, however, not all investigations have been examined.
