The European leaders supported the completion of countrys negotiations for the EU entry by end of the month, news agency HINA reported. They also agreed that the accession treaty be signed by end-2011. The country had to continue the reforms, especially in the areas of judiciary and fundamental rights, in order to assume its membership obligations after its actual entry to the Union. The EU leaders praised the country for its intensive efforts, which helped Croatia reach the final stage of negotiations. Last week, EC President Jose Manuel Barroso said he believed that the EU member states will decide to wrap up the entry talks with Croatia at the blocs summit on June 23-24. The EC has already submitted to the EU Council its proposal to close the final four of the 35 chapters that EU hopefuls must negotiate on in order to gain EU entry. The decision will pave the way for Croatia to become the unions 28th member as of July 2013. |
