EP says Bulgaria, Romania ready to join Schengen area.

By bne IntelliNews June 9, 2011
The European Parliament said in a note on its website that Bulgaria and Romania are ready for a full Schengen membership. However, there are some remaining issues, which will require regular reporting and further attention in the future. Bulgaria should take additional measures to cope with potentially higher migration pressure on its border area with Greece and Turkey, which is seen as one of the most sensitive external border areas of the EU. The country should prepare a special action plan to implement after joining and prepare a common approach with Greece and Turkey regarding the above issue. Bulgaria and Romania should inform within six months the Parliament and the Council about any shortcomings in the implementation of these additional measures. The opinion of the parliament will be sent to the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 9-10 June to discuss the issue.
