Eight firms have filed bids at a tender for granting concession or making public-private partnership (PPP) for financing, designing, building and operating a regional landfill for municipal solid waste in the south-eastern part of Macedonia, local media reported. According to Sitel TV channel, the list of bidders features companies from Germany, Canada, Austria, Turkey and Bulgaria. The private partner will finance, design and build a regional landfill for municipal solid waste and will provide the landfilling service. The international pre-qualification tender was called in April by Macedonia's Environment Ministry and the deadline for submitting offers expired on May 24. After consultations between the local municipalities, the selected bidders will be asked to compete at the second phase of the tender. The 12-ha landfill will collect the solid municipal waste from the 10 nearby municipalities and will be environment-friendly according to the EU standards. It will have a capacity of 1.2mn cu m and is expected to be operational for 25 years. The construction of the landfill is expected to begin in early 2011 and cost some EUR 22mn in investments. The total population in the region is 171,416 and some 300 kg of waste per inhabitant a year is generated on average. The region consists of the municipalities of Bogdanci, Bosilovo, Valandovo, Vasilevo, Gevgelija, Dojran, Konche, Novo Selo, Radovish and Strumica.
