Montenegro concluded the free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) on November 14, the government informed on its website. The agreement, which is expected to enter into force on July 1, 2012, was signed by Montenegrin economy minister Vladimir Kavaric, who said that joining the free trade zone should boost investment in Montenegro and encourage domestic producers to enhance competitiveness. The signing of the free trade agreement was one of the recommendations of the EC and is expected to back Montenegro's EU integration effort. Additionally, it is expected to support Montenegro's candidacy to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO). EFTA and Montenegro commenced free trade negotiations in March 2011. The FTA focuses on liberalisation and facilitation of trade in goods. Protection of intellectual property rights and a chapter on trade and sustainable development are also included into the FTA. |
