Estonias general government debt of 6% of GDP in 2011 was smallest among EU member states, according to European Statistical Agency Eurostat. Latvia's and Lithuania's government debt amounted to 42.6% of GDP and 38.5% of GDP, respectively, being 8th and 6th lowest in EU. Notably, in 14 EU member states the indicator exceeded the EU membership threshold of 60% of GDP. On average in EU in 2011 government debt increased to 82.5% of GDP from 80% in 2010. |
