EC Director-General for Enlargement Sannino visits Macedonia.

By bne IntelliNews January 16, 2013
European Commission Director-General for Enlargement, Stefano Sannino, has paid a regular technical visit to Macedonia, Dnevnik daily reported. Sannino met parliament speaker Trajko Veljanoski, top government officials, the leaders of all political parties, as well as the chairman of the association of journalists. The topic of the talks was the political crisis in the country, which aggravated sharply on Dec 24, when the opposition was ejected from the parliament after brawling in an attempt to prevent debate of the 2013 budget bill. The journalists were ejected from the building as well. After the incident, Branko Crvenkovski, leader of the biggest opposition party SDSM, announced that they are leaving the parliament and are starting a campaign of civil disobedience. Earlier in January, SDSM demanded holding both local and early parliamentary elections in the spring. However, the demand was rejected by the ruling party VMRO-DPMNE. Meanwhile, following the meeting between Sannino and Crvenkovski, SDSM issued a release which informs that they discussed the incident last month and the opposition partys demand for early general elections. The release also confirms SDSMs decision to boycott the parliament. The party will also boycott the local elections, in case no early general elections are scheduled as well.
