EC could block Russia's WTO accession on timber exports, duties.

By bne IntelliNews November 11, 2010
Russia should become a member of World Trade Organisation no sooner than by the end of 2011, EC Trade commissioner Karel de Gucht announced. However, Russia's timber export limitations and possible raising of timber export duties is the issue to be solved prior to the accession, as far as EC is concerned, Guht added. To remind, it was announced in early October by head of Russia's delegation for WTO talks Maxim Medvedkov that negotiations on WTO accession with EU are going to be completed in several weeks. Medvedkov earlier estimated that Russia's membership in WTO and all necessary procedures might be complete by 2012, while FinMin Alexei Kudrin estimated that Russia would join WTO in 10 months. Completion on negotiations on WTO accession with USA was announced at the end of September. Russia is the only major economy not being a part of WTO, holding negotiations to join the organisation since 1994.
