The construction of a highway between the largest town in northern Serbia, Nis, and Kosovo’s capital Pristina, will start in 2018, Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic announced on October 4.

The Nis-Pristina highway is primarily designed to facilitate the transportation of goods and improve trade, but in addition it will contribute to regional stability, for which the normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is crucial. Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic has called it “a highway of peace”.

Work will start in 2018, according to the plan of the Serbian government and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

According to Mihajlovic, this €212mn road will bring new jobs and additional investments, benefitting more than half a million people living in the areas around it, reads the government statement.

Finalisation of the preliminary project funded by the Fund for the Western Balkans is under way, while the government has completed a spatial plan that will soon be considered at the session of this body, the minister added.

Mihajlovic, who met with the EIB’s director for the Western Balkans Dubravka Negre on October 4, pointed out the importance of the so-called "highway of peace”. 77km of the road will pass through Serbia, crossing the Toplica and Nis districts.
