Commercial crimes rise 8.1% in South Africa between 2008-09 and 2009-10

Commercialcrimes rose 8.1% in South Africa between 2008-09 and 2009-10, the South AfricanPolice Service annual crime statistics showed. Murder figures fell 8.6% to16,834 in 2009-10. Of the roughly 2.1mn cases of crime reported, 31.9% werecontact crimes, 26.1% were property-related, 25.5% were other serious crimesand 10% and 6.5% were crimes detected as the result of police action andcontact-related crimes, respectively. Fewer attempted murder cases,cash-in-transit robberies, bank robberies and car hijacking were recorded, butrobberies at non-residential premises rose 4.4% to 14,534. Home robberies roseby 1.9% to 18,786 cases and aggravated robbery decreased 7.5%.
