Russia’s interior ministry calculates that the average size of a bribe in the capital is RUB614,000 ($10,397), Vedomosti reported, citing the head of Research Affairs in Moscow, Oleg Baranov.

The number of corruption crimes the ministry uncovered increased by more than 22% year-on-year, Baranov said. “As a result of economic crime investigations the value of damage caused by corruption exceeded RUB32bn ($542mn),” he said, adding that RUB18bn of this amount had been reimbursed.

The share of compensation of damage increased to 56% this year, which is 28% more than in the first half of 2016, the ministry says.

In January, it was reported that the average amount of bribes in Moscow exceeded RUB2mn, Vedomosti reported. This figure increased by 2.5 times y/y.

However, the average size of bribes is falling compared with the average amount of bribes in Moscow in 2015 of RUB654,000, which had doubled from the year before, the ministry says.
