ArcelorMittals Romanian unit to triple pig iron output on new furnace upgrade.

By bne IntelliNews June 3, 2011
The pig iron output of ArcelorMittal Galati integrated steel mill will nearly triple to 3mn tonnes per year from its current capacity of 1.1mn tpy after the commissioning of furnace 5 this fall, Bursa daily reported, quoting company officials. This corresponds to a gross output of some 4mn tonnes of crude steel. The target produce would match the demand on the domestic and the regional markets where ArcelorMittals local plant is delivering its products, the officials estimated. Currently, the plant exports some two-thirds of its output. The furnace was shut down for upgrade under a project that will eventually incur costs of EUR 80mn compared to an initially estimated EUR 53mn. The Galati-based steel plant used to manufacture 8.9mn tonnes of crude steel before the fall of communism in 1989, but meanwhile it diminished the output in line with the demand and operates only a part of its furnaces by rotation while also upgrading part of them.
