Air Albania launches maiden flight on Tirana-Istanbul route

Air Albania, Albania’s new national air carrier, launched its first test flight from Tirana on September 15, the government said.

Air Albania was set up in November 2017 as a joint venture involving Turkish Airlines, which holds a 49% stake in the company. Albania's MDN Investment and air controller Albcontrol hold 51%. Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Turkey, intends to expand its global network not only with new flight destinations, but also with partnerships.

The first flight was carried out on the Tirana-Istanbul route with an Airbus 319. In October, Air Albania will start flying to other destinations in Europe, the government said in the statement.

Prime Minister Edi Rama was one of the passengers on the first flight.

A direct flight from Tirana to New York is also planned.

Media, citing a Turkish Airlines statement, reported recently that Air Albania was set up with capital of $30mn.
